Extensive Use of CGM May Benefit People with Type 2 Diabetes

According to new research, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) can help a larger group of patients with type 2 diabetes compared to those for whom it is recommended at present.

A randomized clinical trial, published in JAMA, stated that CGM use was associated with a significant improvement in A1c at 8 months among adults with type 2 diabetes being treated with long-acting insulin alone without premeal insulin. CGM use, at present, in type 2 diabetes is strongly recommended only among those taking both long-acting basal insulin as well as short-acting pre-meal bolus insulin.

Another study, a retrospective cohort study in a healthcare delivery system of patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, treated with insulin, identified by primary care physicians for real-time CGM, noted that patients with type 2 diabetes had a greater decline in A1c compared to those with type 1 diabetes who started CGM.
